Duct Cleaning Glossary

What do NADCA, negative pressure, and source removal actually mean? This glossary defines every term in plain English — each one links to the service or guide where it matters most.

NADCA

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association — the industry body that sets the ACR standard for HVAC system cleaning. Source removal

The NADCA-recognized cleaning method: physically dislodging dust and debris from duct surfaces (agitation) while a high-powered vacuum under negative pressure extracts it from the system. The opposite of simply spraying deodorizer into vents. Air duct cleaning →

Negative pressure

A vacuum condition created inside your ductwork during cleaning so that dislodged dust flows into the collection unit instead of into your rooms. Truck-mounted vacuums create far stronger negative pressure than portable units. Our process →

Truck-mounted vacuum

Supply & return ducts

Supply ducts deliver heated or cooled air to your rooms; return ducts pull room air back to the furnace or air handler. A whole-system cleaning covers both sides — cleaning only supplies leaves half the system dirty. Whole-home cleaning →

MERV rating

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — a 1–20 scale for how effectively a filter captures particles. Most homes do well with MERV 8–13. A high-MERV filter helps, but it can't remove the dust already settled inside your ducts. Filter vs. cleaning explained →

Reverse-spinner (dryer vents)

A rotating cleaning head driven backward through the dryer vent line, scouring packed lint off the duct walls from the exterior cap to the drum connection. It cleans the full run — not just the few feet a brush can reach. Dryer vent cleaning →

Lint fire risk

Lint is highly flammable, and a restricted dryer vent traps the heat that ignites it. Failure to clean dryer vents is a leading factor in home dryer fires — an annual cleaning is the fire-safety fix, not just an efficiency upgrade. Dryer vent cleaning →

Indoor air quality (IAQ)

VOCs

Volatile organic compounds — gases released by paints, cleaners, new furniture, and building materials. They contribute to odors and poor IAQ; ventilation and source control matter more than filtration for VOCs. Learn about air quality →

Air changes per hour (ACH)

Camera inspection

Duct sealing

Sanitizing / antimicrobial fogging
